Dakeng Formation

Dakeng Fm

Period:
Triassic

Age Interval:
Early to middle Late Triassic (TJ99)

Province:
Fujian

Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located in Coal mine of Dakeng Village, Zhangping County, Fujian Province, which was named by 303 geological group of Fujian Geological Bureau in 1964. It was interpreted to formed during early to middle Late Triassic by Tongshun Zhou in 1978, based on the floral assemblages.

Synonym:

Lithology and Thickness

Lower part of this formation is mainly dark grey fine-grained sandstone, siltstone and mudstone with coal stem. The upper part is dominated dark grey siltstone, mudstone intercalated with fine-grained sandstone. Thickness is about 121-160 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Fine-grained sandstone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

The grey thick medium- to coarse-grained sandstone at the base of Dakeng Fm lie conformity in contact with the underlying Anren Fm

Upper contact

Displayed unconformity with the overlying Wenbinshan Fm. However, the Dakeng formation was deposited continuously to the overlying Wenbinshan Fm in Dakeng region.

Regional extent

This formation was mainly distributed in Daleng and peripheral small basins in Zhangping. Sequences were mostly well-exposed in Dakeng region, with best coal and the thickness reached 428 m. but the thickness decreased northwardly, with sediments coarsening-upwards. Thickness in the north part of Wuling was only 160 m and was 121 m in the south part of Qianban.
